Goal Setting

Well Formed Outcomes

“A goal is a dream with a deadline”. Napoleon Hill

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) defines a well-formed outcome as a specific and achievable goal that is formulated in a way that aligns with a person’s values and desires. The process of creating a well-formed outcome involves several steps, including defining the goal in specific and positive language, considering the impact of the goal, determining achievability, and developing a plan of action.

Having a well-formed outcome is important because it provides clarity and direction for achieving a specific goal. When people are clear about what they want to achieve, they are better able to focus their efforts and motivate themselves towards success. This can lead to increased self-empowerment and self-confidence, as individuals are able to take control of their lives and work towards their desired outcomes.

A well-formed outcome can be modified or tweaked as necessary to ensure that it remains aligned with a person’s values and desires. For example, the timeline may be adjusted, the wording may be refined, or the goal may be broken down into smaller, more manageable steps.

Here are some examples of well-formed outcomes:

  1. “I will write a 500-word blog post on healthy eating by the end of the week, so that I can share my knowledge and help others improve their health.”
  2. “I will save $200 a month for the next six months, so that I can pay for my dream vacation to Hawaii and have a stress-free travel experience.”
  3. “I will practice mindfulness meditation for 10 minutes every day for the next month, so that I can reduce stress and anxiety and feel more calm and focused in my daily life.”

In each of these examples, the goal follows the SMART approach, it  is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant to the individual’s values and desires, and has a clear Timeline and plan of action. By following the process of creating a well-formed outcome, individuals can increase their motivation and self-empowerment, and work towards achieving their desired outcomes.

Having a well-formed outcome provides clarity and direction for achieving a specific goal. It also helps to increase motivation and self-empowerment by providing a clear picture of what needs to be done and by when. By defining a goal in specific, positive terms, people are better able to visualize their success, which can increase their confidence and motivation.

A well-formed outcome can be modified or adapted by adjusting any of the elements of the goal, such as changing the wording, tweaking the timeline, or breaking the goal down into smaller, more manageable steps. It’s important to remember that a well-formed outcome should be flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances, while still maintaining its alignment with the person’s values and desires.
